Pregnancy, Babies and Kids….

Husband with hand on wife's bellyChiropractic checkups are important before and during pregnancy.

Firstly, to keep the Nervous System free of interference to encourage hormonal balance and to prepare the body for pregnancy.

Secondly, to maintain structural balance in the spine and pelvis to allow the baby the optimum space in which to develop. Balance in these areas will encourage a more straight forward and natural birth.

Structural imbalances in the expectant mother can put pressure on the baby’s spine or skull leading to vertebral and cranial dysfunction in the baby.

Structural imbalances in the mother can also increase the incidence of breech and transverse presentations.

A particular chiropractic technique called Webster’s aims to create balance in the mother’s pelvis which will encourage a breech baby to turn naturally. Exercises will also be recommended to help turn the baby.

During pregnancy, hormonal changes will soften ligaments in the expectant mother which can cause instability in the pelvic joints. This can cause pelvic and spinal dysfunctions to occur more easily resulting in unpleasant aches and pains.

Chiropractic can help realign and stabilise joints using specific adjusting techniques, and advice can be given on extra pelvic stabilising supports if required.

Baby boy crawlingBabies can develop their first vertebral and cranial movement within the womb, either because the baby is overdue and becomes too large for its space, or because the mother has structural imbalances which reduce the amount of uniform space for the baby to develop freely.

The birthing process is challenging enough for both mother and child without the added stress of a difficult labour.

Babies can also develop spinal/cranial dysfunction during the birth process. If the birth is too fast, this can put enormous compressive pressure on the baby’s skull and neck in particular causing the joints in the skull and spine to jam up leading to nerve interference.

Assisted deliveries utilising forceps and ventouse (vacuum extraction) can also cause injury to the skull and neck creating spinal/cranial dysfunction and nerve interference.

The natural birthing process is designed to stimulate the nervous system, and C-sections can create problems in the newborn as the baby has not had the opportunity to use their primitive reflexes which are designed to move them through the birth canal, and stimulate their young Nervous Systems.

FAQ’s

How do children get spinal/cranial dysfunction?

Spinal/cranial dysfunction can occur:

  • Physically
From the moment your baby starts to walk, and has all sorts of tumbles and falls. As children get older they injure themselves playing games or sports, and at school posture can become compromised by carrying heavy schoolbags across one shoulder, poor seating, and sitting for hours in front of the computer.
  • Chemically
A poor diet, and not enough water can cause stress on the organs which don’t function efficiently causing an imbalance in body chemistry that tightens the muscles which stresses the spine and ultimately the nervous system.
  • Emotionally
Stress and other emotional upsets also cause a change in body chemistry which affects the muscles and causes them to tighten. Tight muscles will pull on the spine causing the vertebrae to become misaligned.

What are Chiropractic Paediatrics?

Chiropractic Paediatrics encompasses pre-conception, pregnancy, birth, infancy and childhood.

What does a Chiropractor do?

Chiropractors focus on the function of the Nervous System since the Nervous System controls and co-ordinates every aspect of the body. In order for the body to function correctly, the Nervous System must be free of any interference.

How do Chiropractors assist the body to work better?

Chiropractors don’t treat any condition or symptoms of a condition; we simply locate and reduce areas spinal/cranial dysfunction using very gentle adjustive techniques. This encourages the Nervous System to function more freely allowing the body to work better.

What causes interference to the Nervous System?

The Nervous System is comprised of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. The brain is protected by the skull and the spinal cord is protected by the spine (vertebral column). The peripheral nerves exit between each vertebrae and travel out to the body from the spinal cord to supply all the glands, organs, blood vessels, muscles, ligaments and tendons. If any of the vertebrae become misaligned or lose their proper motion, then pressure on the peripheral nerves can result. This spinal/cranial dysfunction can cause a breakdown of communication between the brain and the body and in particular to the glands and organs. This can lead to imbalances in the endocrine (hormone) system. If hormones are out of balance, this can contribute to problems with fertility, conception, pregnancy, and breastfeeding.
